Ben Wilinski inspires you to practice your guitar. Your guitar may be a book you've been talking about but not reading. Your guitar may be some beautiful dream requiring cranes and a few members of the city council on your side. It may just be telling somebody that you don't care it's daylight out and the world is sober. I want to touch your hair every night. But whereas so many of us keep these guitars in the cases we bought'em in long ago, Ben has a been playing his for years. He's been the smirky kid in the corner of the smoky apartment, singing love-hate songs to a cluster of friends while cheery collegiate winos smoke, applaud and have cheese bread delivered. Later, eager to fill the gap between 9 p.m. and whenever the Next Gear Daddies decide to play, he's been on stage singing of nice ass jeans, and how once I loved you but now I love you more. People smile and congratulate him, laugh with him because he's so damn funny. Night after night this goes on. Celebrated. When you see him the next day, he's still got the guitar. And he's not calmed down yet and you find yourself talking with Ben seriously about expression and joy and pursuing what's in your heart. Weird thing to be doing at the Post Office. But Ben goes everywhere with his material because he is his material, and just as it's good to see Ben perform, it's equally nice to know this fine disc is available to spin whenever we need a reminder of the guitar-playing that awaits us. -Joe Tougas, editer in chief of STATIC Magazine- |
